Furniture design often follows a very standardized set of guidelines, where the use of materials like fabrics and wood are used in a conventional way. From studying the characteristics of these materials I began to wonder if the use of an alternative material with contrasting qualities would still allow the furniture to function in the same way.
In this design for a stool I initially combined wood and clay but then discovered a new material called Concrete Canvas™. Experimenting with this new medium made me decide to reverse the role of each material using the Concrete Canvas™ as the structure. Imposing this reversal helped me to generate and evolve new ideas, combining sculptural form and function.
